Chapter Twelve
âI am going to stop and pick up some sweets for my wife. You go on ahead and tell Emma our news.â
Lucas nodded his agreement as Vernon turned his horse toward the main shops in town. He glanced up at the dusky, azure blue sky as he guided his stallion toward the Dentley estate. They had made good time on their journey back from London.
Minutes later, he rode up the driveway to the front of the property. When he reached the house, he got off his horse, handing the reins to a waiting groom. âRub him down thoroughly. Give him some food and water. He has worked hard today.â
âYes, my lord.â
He turned, swiftly mounting the front steps. The door opened before he reached the top stair.
âGood afternoon, my lord.â
âHello, Worth. Is Lady Emma available to see me?â
âI believe she is in her bedchamber getting ready for the evening meal. Lady Dentley is already in the drawing room. Would you care to join her? I will inform Lady Emmaâs maid you are here.â
âThank you.â He followed the butler down the hallway.
âLord Millington is here to see Lady Emma, my lady,â Worth announced from the door.
âOh, please show him in,â Lady Dentley answered.
He strode through the open door and bowed. âI came as soon as I could. I wanted to apprise your sister of what we were able to learn.â
Lady Dentley stood up from her chair near the fireplace. She wore a pale pink evening gown with a matching overskirt shot with silver threads and decorated with small white roses on the edge of her cap sleeves. âGood afternoon, Lord Millington. Is my husband not with you?â
âNo, Iâm sorry. He stopped in town to buy you a gift.â The situation proved awkward. He silently berated himself for his rush to see Lady Emma. It made more sense to arrive in Lord Dentleyâs company.
âHow sweet of him,â Lady Dentley remarked, not appearing concerned by her husbandâs delay. âMy sister will be down momentarily.â
The door opened behind him. Lady Emma stood on the threshold.
âHello, Lord Millington.â
He opened his mouth to answer her greeting but shut it again, at a loss for words. She wore a Pomona green evening gown. It clung to her generous curves. The color served to emphasize the deep brown of her eyes. Her thick auburn hair was swept up into a loose coil on the crown of her head, allowing stray tendrils to caress her neck. Leaving the door ajar, she stepped forward into the room a few steps and then stopped. âWhere is Vernon?â
âLord Millington informed me he stopped in town to purchase a gift for me,â Lady Dentley told her. âHe does spoil me so.â
âOh. Yes, he certainly does.â Lady Emma turned back to him. âIs there news of Sir Charles?â
He cleared his throat before replying. âYour brother-in-law and I came upon him leaving Lord Putneyâs townhouse in London. He was visibly shocked to see us, and we were hopeful he would cooperate with us. But after he recovered from his surprise, he lapsed into his surly, churlish manner again.
