After her morning chores were done at Camp Up, Jessica arrived at Fresh by Winters ten minutes early. Located in the heart of downtown Royal, Marcus’s design studio was as modern of a building as Jessica had ever seen in the town. Cars drove past behind her on the two-lane road, the chilly breeze fluttering the awning of the shop next door. The storefront was floor-to-ceiling glass walls, with cherrywood and metal accents. A metal sign to the right of the single door read Fresh by Winters.

The sudden weight of whom she was going up against squeezed her throat tight. Marcus had power and wealth and the ability to crush her. She owned a little glamping business that only recently started making her feel like she could breath financially.

No! You are Jessica Drummond, kick-ass chef.

She forced a big deep breath and lifted her chin, entering the business with enough fake confidence she was sure she could fool anyone into believing she had this under control.

A receptionist sat behind a live-edge reception desk. She was pretty with big blue eyes and shiny blond hair—because of course she was. Jessica doubted Marcus ever surrounded himself with anything but pretty, shiny things. “Welcome to Fresh by Winters. How can I help you?” she asked.

Jessica smiled. “Jessica Drummond here to see Marcus Winters.”

“Ah, yes, come on back, Jessica,” the receptionist said, leaving her chair and heading down the hallway.

The receptionist entered the first door on the right and then proceeded to pour a glass of water. “Please let me know if you need anything else.”

“Thanks,” Jessica said, accepting the glass and then taking her seat at the meeting room table.

The room itself had her taking a big, long sip. The type of wealth the Winters and Del Rio families had was nothing she’d ever encountered before. The space was modern, with more glass walls and big, bright windows, and even the air seemed humidified, lacking the dryness most office spaces had. The office chair beneath her was more comfortable than her chair in her living room.

She set her water back down, telling herself again that she belonged there. Sure, she was a classically trained chef, but she’d never planned a party the scale of the engagement party. Her reputation was on the line now, and all she had to do was get this hunk of a CEO to see that they could do so much better and bring more life to the design and then they could get things back on track.

A firm plan.

Until those dark eyes that had made her restless last night again locked onto hers as Marcus approached through the hallway. She swallowed the butterflies fluttering in her belly and shoved them far...far...down.

No man had a right to look that good in a suit. Especially one that she should want nothing to do with. The Del Rio family had been good to her, giving her a chance at her dream job and setting into the motion all the right steps toward seeing her dreams come true.
