His complex depiction of the country in the novel suggests disappointment in its failure to live up to the ideals on which it was founded. In this regard Fitzgerald is particularly focused on the concept of America being a land that permitted its citizens to reinvent themselves. Gatsby and Myrtle attempt to escape the life into which they were born but do not succeed in this quest, in part because of the failure of American society to permit such a change. This pessimism is tempered by a hope that America will fulfill its promise in time, but in the closing lines of the novel, the suggestion is that it is a pursuit that may never come to an end. Nick reflects on Gatsby's belief in the green light but then shifts from the focus on one man to include us all. Just as the green light eluded Gatsby, â[it] eluded us then, but that's no matterâtomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther⦠. And one fine morningââ (Fitzgerald 2019, p. 218).
