After the hot and heavy make-out session in the shed, I shouldâve taken a cold shower, but I was too excited to see Myles in my domain.
He parked in the parking lot that surrounded Copper Summit. Heâd insisted on using his car even though each trip assaulted his paint job with rocks.
He stared out the windshield at the building in front of us. Admittedly not as impressive as Foster Houseâs headquarters, Copper Summit was still gorgeous. Daddyâs grandpa had built a giant wooden building with simple windows at first. Then heâd added the timber accents on the outside as he started to profit. From one end, long wooden tunnels winged out. The barrel rooms, done to look like an old mining shaft as an ode to the copper mines in the area. Grandpa had thought open-pit copper mining made blemishes on the countryside. Daddy had added on a wing to sell locally made products like huckleberry taffy, caramels, and lemonade mix, and then finally a bar for the public to enjoy our cocktails.
Copper Summit had been like a playground for me when I was finally old enough to legally play with the spirits and flavors.
âEven this looks different,â he muttered.
âThe bar was added once we were all out of the house. Daddy liked to joke that he suddenly had a lot of money as soon as he wasnât feeding hungry teens.â Tears gathered in my eyes, and I swiped them away. âIâll never not miss that man.â
Another tear escaped, and Myles tenderly wiped it away. âIâm almost jealous.â Lines of concern crinkled his eyes. âYou got to experience two sets of good parents.â He wiped at another tear. âBut Iâd never want you to know the life I had.â
I grabbed his hand and smoothed my thumb over the moist tip of his finger. My tear. âMy Kerrigan parents were loving, but I think many would argue about how good they were.â
He lifted a brow. I kept hold of his hand. âI donât remember specifics. Neither does Junie. Summer and Autumn have filled in what they know, and Mama finally told us what she heard from the social workers.â I took a fortifying breath. Iâd never told anyone about them. People heard my parents died in a crash when we were camping, and they got caught up in the sadness of four girls going through the trauma of an accident that stole their parents. They didnât think further about the details. âWe were homeless.â
He frowned. âI thought you guys were camping.â
âBecause we had nowhere to go. Mama said there was nothing. No money, no accounts, no assets. The house was foreclosed on. They left everything, and we camped. Summer said she remembered Mama Starr or Daddy Bjorn being gone for a day, like they got work for a day, and then weâd go to another campground.â
âYou didnât know you were homeless?â
I shook my head. âI thought it was fun. Mama Starr would tell us stories while we looked at the stars.â I smiled, remembering some of the conversations Iâd had with my sisters over the years.
