CHAPTER TWELVE

THE NEXT FEW DAYS, Gianna split her time between taking photos while on nature walks and working in her office. She’d taken a lot more pictures since she’d been home than she imagined possible. But the weather was too nice to be stuck inside all day.

She thought about grabbing her camera, her tripod and going off on one of her nature walks. Her entry for the photo competition was due soon and she still didn’t think she had a winner out of the hundreds of photos she’d taken so far. She pulled her latest batch of photos up on her extra-large monitor. There were some good ones, but for one reason or another, she rejected them all. None of them had what it took to stand out in the crowd.

Just then her phone rang. It was her agent. He had a lead on a new assignment for her. It was another nature show with a different host. This time she’d be in Alaska.

She knew the area was beautiful but the idea of roughing it didn’t appeal to her. At least that’s what she told herself was the reason she wasn’t anxious to leave Lake Como. It certainly had nothing to do with her sleep-deprived, grumpy housemate. Nothing at all.

She told her agent she’d think about it. He said she had some time. Production didn’t start for a couple of months.

Maybe what she needed was a break. She headed to the kitchen to pack some food, but passing by the open doors, she noticed Dario working on the patio. His posture was rigid as he leaned over his laptop, rereading what he’d written. Then he blew out a breath and slouched back in the chair. His fingers raked through his hair. It didn’t look like the writing was going well.

She thought about going out and speaking with him. Things between them had been rocky lately. She’d like to fix it. However, it needed to be more than a brief conversation. Perhaps he needed to get away from this place too—away from his computer—away from the stress of work.

A little later, Gianna emerged from the house in jean shorts, a pink blouse and one of her grandmother’s hats. Her grandmother had had an obsession with hats. Once in a while, Gianna would wear one. Today, she’d chosen a big straw hat with a white bow and pink flowers. It was more than a retro fashion statement. It would help protect her from the sunshine because where they were going there wouldn’t be any shade.

Dario glanced up from his laptop. “Don’t you look cute?”

She smiled and curtsied. “Why thank you.”

He chuckled. “You’re in a good mood. I take it things are going well with your photography business?”

She shrugged. “I guess you could say that. But it’s not really a business. Right now, it’s more of a hobby. But my agent called with a job offer.”

“Is that a good thing?”

“I don’t know. It’d mean living out of a duffel bag again.”

“Then turn it down.
