Late that afternoon, before Mama came home and they ate a quick dinner before taking a night bus to San Marcos, a bang at the door made Maya jump a million miles. She peeked through the curtain. Well, that didn’t take long. It was Oscar. Maya hesitated, then opened the door an inch, the chain still on. He shoved his finger into the space. “You’d better be careful, bitch.”

“Stop!”

“Stop!” he mocked her.

He removed his finger from the door, and—slowly dragged it across his neck. “I mean it.”

“Why are you doing this!” Maya cried.

“You couldn’t keep your stupid mouth shut, could you? Lisbeth broke up with me. I knew I should’ve—” And he turned and left.
