Catherine had already prepared for bed and was brushing her hair when she heard him ride up. Her stomach and heart reacted as they always did, churning and thumping in anticipation. Even as her common sense called her a fool and reminded her of her earlier vows never to see him again, she ran to the window to verify what her ears had already told her.

Was she crazy? her mind screamed at her. The man had bedded her twice and never mentioned marriage— or at least not in a serious way. He’d never said he loved her, never even hinted at any tenderness.

But he’d brought her flowers, her heart argued. And she wasn’t even sure she wanted to marry him. Marriage was such a permanent state, and did she really want to bind herself permanently to Sam Connors? As a lover he was magnificent, but she still couldn’t imagine them growing old together the way her parents had.

All she knew for certain was that she wanted to be with him now, tonight. Other women took lovers, women who didn’t want the restrictions of marriage. Why should she deny herself the pleasure he brought her? She well knew how little pleasure life generally offered. To refuse it when it came seemed wasteful, somehow.

And Catherine was certainly strong and sophisticated enough to deal with the consequences of a love affair, whatever they might be. Having Sam Connors couldn’t hurt her, she decided as she heard his footsteps approaching.

Sam paused outside, wiping damp palms on his pant legs and feeling like a hypocrite. Hadn’t he warned Davy about women who surrendered their virtue before marriage? “If a woman’ll spread her legs for you, she’ll do it for anybody,” he’d said, but he knew it was a lie. Cat was his and only his.

He’d seen the flash of fear in her eyes when he’d come to the school last week. She was worried and rightly so. Tonight she’d demand to know his intentions; she’d probably even refuse to kiss him until things were settled between them. In spite of himself, he smiled. Her demands would be a relief, settling their relationship once and for all. The future stretched out before him, a continuous stream of glorious days brightened by Catherine’s presence in his life.

Feeling more confident, he strode up to the school and knocked on her door. It opened at once, and Cat stood there in the circle of lamplight, looking like an angel in her white nightdress with her golden hair spilling over her shoulders.

Wordlessly, she stepped aside and allowed him to enter, closing the door behind him. For a moment they simply stared at each other. He tried to read her thoughts, judge her feelings, but she kept her face carefully expressionless.

She seemed small and fragile, and he ached to hold her close. “Cat?” he whispered.

He never knew who made the first move, but in the next second she was in his arms, warm and soft and vibrant. Her mouth opened beneath
