The word Dave uttered would have made Kimberly blush, if she wasnât already in bed. So different from Saturday nights in the past, when theyâd sought out new bands every weekend and danced the night away.
He should have gone directly to his office after meeting with Lorraine and pulled her money from the offshore account.
Instead, heâd taken care of Kimberlyâs errands, then coaxed her out to dinner to lift her flagging spiritsâgiving BK the opportunity to change the login and password and lock him out.
Translation? Lorraine wasnât going to get her money back, and her days were numbered.
Unless he took action.
Leaning back in the desk chair in his home office, he massaged his temple, where a headache was beginning to throb.
Could he go to the police, bargain with them, agree to cooperate in exchange for leniency? It wasnât as if heâd known BK was going to kill people, after all. Nothing had been said about that in the beginning. Nor had Fredâs death set off too many alarms. The man had been older.
After stumbling across Mavisâs death notice, however, the niggling suspicion that Fredâs death may not have been as innocent as it seemed had become certainty, especially in light of BKâs responses to his comments about their demise. If he had the stomach to check on the other clients whoâd signed up for the investment heâd offered them for BK, heâd no doubt find they too had died . . . of natural causes.
But if he did go to the police, what could he use as a bargaining chip? He had no idea who BK was and no guesses about who was behind the blackmail scheme, other than Lee. But if she wasnât involved, siccing the cops on her would add insult to injury, and sheâd already had more than her share of trouble.
Visiting the police would do nothing but ruin his marriage and incriminate him in a scheme they might not be able to stop, since the money was held in an offshore account he could no longer access. And if BK decided to follow through on the threat to cut him out of the loop entirely, he couldnât help much with any sting operation. His only contact with BK was via an untraceable cellphone.
âDave?â
At Kimberlyâs drowsy voice, he swiveled toward the door. âCanât you sleep, sweetheart?â He stood and crossed to her.
âItâs lonely in there without you.â
âIâm getting ready to shut down.â He pulled her close and kissed the top of her head. âIâll join you in five minutes.â
âIâll be waiting. Love you.â
âLove you back.â
She hobbled back down the hall, cane in hand, the sleepshirt sheâd always loved hanging on her too-thin frame.
As always, his heart ached for her. For them. For what once was and would never be again.
Yet the accident hadnât damaged her sweet spirit and loving soul, and together they were coping with her physical limitations. All would have been well if he hadnât let loneliness and despair and grief short-circuit his common sense and unravel his moral fiber.
