The Raiders won. It was the only thing anyone was talking about Monday morning at school. I walked the halls invisible, as kids still rode the high of the win.
âMiley,â a voice called, and I glanced over my shoulder to find Lily and Ashleigh approaching me.
âHey, Lily. How are you?â
âIâm okay, thanks.â She smiled. âI missed you at the game Friday. Avery scored two touchdowns. He was amazing.â
âGross, Lil, thatâs my brother youâre talking about.â Ashleigh chuckled. âIâm Ashleigh,â she said. âYou must be Miley. Lily told me all about you.â
âShe did, huh? All good things, I hope.â
âShe said you and my brother had some crazy chemistry at Ice Tâs.â
âI⦠really donât know what to say to that.â I flushed.
âMy brotherâs never had a girlfriend before.â
âOh, Iâm not hisââ
âI know.â She snickered. âBut you could be.â
The thought made my stomach clench. But it was a fantasy. Avery didnât want to talk to me, let alone be with me.
âOh, I donât know about that. Your brother isnât exactly my number one fan.â
âBecause of the article you wrote about the team?â
âI see youâve done your research,â I said.
âI like to know things. But you helped Lily and I think everyone deserves a second chance, so as long as you donât plan on screwing my brother over again, I think we can be friends.â Ashleigh thrust out her hand.
This was so not how I saw my morning going, but I slid my palm against hers and said, âTo new friends.â
Just then, an announcement came over the speaker that Homecoming tickets were on sale. The hall exploded into cheers, but I wasnât celebrating.
âI canât wait until weâre old enough for Homecoming,â Ashleigh let out a dreamy sigh.
âOh, you can go to Homecoming. Anyone can,â I corrected her.
âYeah, I know, but I mean like go⦠with a guy. No way my dad will let me go on a date yet.â
âI bet heâd let you go with Ezra.â
âWhoâs Ezra?â
âHeâs in our class. Ashleigh has a crush on him.â Lily grinned.
âI do not. Heâs⦠not my type.â
âAnd what type would that be?â My brow arched.
âEzra is complicated. We hang out sometimes, but he tends to do his own thing. Hey, we should totally go together.â Her face lit up.
âOh, I donât think so. Iâm not a fan of organized social events.â
âPlease, itâll be fun.â Lily gave me a reassuring nod. It was nice to see her more confident than she had been the other day.
âIâm not sure Avery will want me there.â And heâd no doubt be crowned Homecoming King.
âWho cares what Avery thinks? He wonât want us there either, but thatâs not going to stop us.â
âIâll think about it.â
âExcellent.â Ashleigh clapped. âWe should probably get to class.â She grabbed Lilyâs hand and started pulling her away. âBut it was nice to meet you, Miley, and donât let my brother be an ass.â
âOh look, if it isnât the snitch bitch.â
I turned around to find Kendall Novak glaring at me.
âOh, hey, Kendall.â
âWhy were you talking to Averyâs sister just now?â
âThatâs none of your business.
