Chapter Fourteen

Eddie left early in the morning to head back to Bristol for a production meeting. Everyone, he said, was very happy with what had been filmed so far and a new series was already being discussed.

Ashley lay in bed, drained. They hadn’t slept much. They’d lain awake reading through his grandfather’s war records and talking over the revelation that he and Chet were the same man. She could feel Eddie’s exhausted shock and they’d made love tenderly into the night. She hadn’t wanted him to leave, knowing he was still in turmoil, but it couldn’t be helped. He had to go.

She got up to make tea and feed Bronte and then returned to bed to laze. Looking around the tiny bedroom, she winced. Most of her larger canvasses and painting materials were now stored at the Arts Workshop but a few paintings were still leaning perilously against the wall and taking up valuable space. The events of yesterday, and the way Eddie had taken the news and had dealt with Ruby thoughtfully and compassionately, had decided something. She wanted Eddie close to her. She accepted he would have to leave for work and maybe to visit Hal in the States, but she wanted him near to her in the precious time they would have together. If he was only with her for a few days at a time, she didn’t want to waste any of that living in separate flats.

Her tiny flat was fine for just her and Bronte but she couldn’t see it working long term for when Eddie came to stay. For one, there was precious little storage. She wondered what his Exeter flat was like and vaguely remembered he’d said it was one-bedroomed, so it was unlikely to be much bigger. They hadn’t discussed moving in together, but Ashley couldn’t see why they shouldn’t. She loved the man, he loved her and, more importantly, she trusted him more than any other person she’d ever met. It had never been an option with Piers, she realised. With Eddie she knew. She just knew she wanted to be with him as much as possible. She didn’t care if people said it was all moving too quickly. She knew it was right.
