Spike clicked his own pocket watch shut and watched the street anxiously. The building before them was not Gunnar’s mansion. That phase of the plan would come soon enough, but certain ducks had to be put into certain rows first. There were no signs hanging over the shop’s nondescript door, nor even any windows at eye level. It was the sort of place that did not need to advertise, because the people who might need to know about it already knew and the people who didn’t know about it were surely happier that way. Any advertisement accurate enough to do the shop justice would have given the local schoolchildren nightmares.

“Get ready,” he whispered. “Any minute now.”

In the shadows behind him, Drusilla leaned closer. “You’re sure we can’t kill anyone?” she whispered. “Not even a little bit? I like the killing part best.”

“You know I do too, love,” Spike said. “But we’re trying a little finesse this time. Might be fun. I’ll take you out for a nice homicide in the country after, to celebrate.”

“With torture on top?”

“Of course.” Drusilla smiled and bit her lower lip. Spike pressed his forehead against hers. “You deserve it,” he whispered.

“Could you two wait to get all horny and horrifying until after we’ve pulled this off?” Rieka whispered, landing in a crouch on the paving stones behind them. “Or not at all? That would be fine, too.”

Spike shot her a glare. “Well?” he said.

Rieka gave him a solemn nod.

She was all no-nonsense, that one—but at least she was taking the job seriously. It had been over a week since the ordeal at Waterloo, and Spike was not having a repeat of that disaster. This time it would be different. The whole team had planned and practiced their parts until they could recite their roles in their sleep.

“All right, then. Curtain up. Let’s start the show,” he whispered. Their window of opportunity would be small, but they only needed a few minutes for this to work. “Stick close.”

Spike slipped from his hiding place and hurried up to the quiet building. He glanced left and right, then took a running leap, kicked off the wall, and caught hold of the eaves hanging over the second floor. He pulled himself up into the shadows of the overhang, and a muffled whoosh behind him announced that Drusilla had followed suit.

Rieka’s footsteps were thunderous by comparison, but she kept up as stealthily as she was able, pressing her back against the wall once she had crossed the street. A canvas satchel hung across her chest. “A little help?”

Spike reached down, and Rieka jumped to grab hold of his hand. He hoisted her up until her boots found traction on the ledge of the solitary second-story window.

“You two are pretty smooth,” Rieka whispered. “I wonder why we don’t hear about more vampire burglars.”

Spike sighed. “I think we’re more suited to highway robbery and good old-fashioned back-alley murders. Got the treacle?”

Rieka pulled a jar from her satchel and waggled it at him before popping off the lid.
