Chapter 12

Amara

Why do men have to be so thick-headed? Okay, that wasn’t fair. Why do all the men in my life have to be thick-headed? More than that, why did a man that wanted nothing but casual keep acting like we were in some serious relationship?

It’s been over a month since he pulled his shit at the Meeting Room. Since that night, he’d been put in time out. Instead of his growling presence next to the stage, I had Drew. He was a welcome change and, I had to admit, someone I felt sorry for. I knew that tucked in his ear was an earpiece filled with one voice—Kasin.

I shook my head; today was the first of my two days off, and I would be damned if my head was going to be filled with thoughts of Kasin or the Meeting Room. Instead, I would be focusing on the housework I had neglected since taking on my role in the operation. My reward for being an adult today was a girls’ night.

Even with the juggling I had to do between my regular job at Porter Enterprises and my hours at the club, I was grateful for the friends I had gained. Especially, Isabella.

At first, I was a bit hesitant to have another Porter in my life. The two I had to start with were a handful, Kasin more so than Roark. Being an acquaintance of Isabella’s had been one thing. Being her friend meant there were questions and side glances with little giggles regarding Kasin.

But her carefree, I don’t give a shit personality was something I needed. As icing on the cake, she got just as frustrated with the exact same brother I did. With her being forbidden to step foot inside the club, her relationship with Kasin was that of tolerance.

I turned up the current playlist sounding from the speakers and set to the task at hand. I needed to freshen this place up and get the chicken enchiladas with sour cream sauce prepared. It had been months since I’d made the dish my grandmother had taught me. Actually, it had been months since I’d cooked something that didn’t require the use of the microwave, but comfort was something I needed with the ongoing Kasin mess.

The sound of the two-hour reminder cut off the music, and I glanced around the room. The house looked and smelled amazing. I caught my reflection in the pristine stainless-steel refrigerator. A reflection that showed I would need every minute of the two hours to get ready. Swiping the glass of wine that was a celebration for completing my tasks, I headed down the hall.

I made it halfway down the hall when knocking came from my front door.

Shit. She was early.

“Hold on, I’ll be right there.”

When I reached the door, I unlocked it and swung it open.

“There is being punctual and this—”

My mouth stopped working and the words got stuck in my throat. I tried to quickly close the door but failed.

“Go away, Kasin. I have plans.
