The Father of American Surgery

Dr. Philip Syng Physick (1768–1837), the “Father of American Surgery,” had an impressive career at Pennsylvania Hospital. Physick initially questioned his career choice; fortunately for his eventual patients, his father forbade him to leave medicine. Physick was renowned for the steadiness of his hand and precision, especially as surgery progressed and became more complicated. Like Benjamin Rush, Physick was one of the few physicians who remained in Philadelphia during the yellow fever crisis.

Dr. Physick was known for seeking bodies for dissection. While working one day, Physick received a knock at the door, a delivery of a body. Unfortunately, it was the body of Physick’s mentor, the Benjamin Rush. A shocker, to say the least. This prompted Physick to give specific instructions that when he died, his body should be kept in the family home for several months so that decomposition would render it useless for dissection.
