CHAPTER TEN

Dark Side of the Moon

Lucy was gone for some time, though how long it was impossible to determine. All Hogan could do was wait it out in the cellar, pacing up and down watching as the light slowly faded. Eventually movement above heralded her return. Then he heard voices. The gun leapt into his hand, body muscles tightening. A heavy silence followed. It seemed an age before the bolt on the cellar door slid back. Hogan stood ready to defend himself, but then the girl’s swirling blue dress appeared and he gave a gasp of relief.

‘That was Doc Barnett and his assistant taking Pa to the surgery.’ He followed her back upstairs. Blotchy cheeks informed Hogan that she had been crying. ‘They’ve brought the bodies back in coffins and placed them inside the church along with Howard Kemper ready for an all-night vigil.’ More tears followed. ‘Elias Jacoby has said he will take the first two hour watch. The funeral and burials are to take place tomorrow afternoon.’

Hogan didn’t want to rush her, but he was anxious to learn about the town ‘vigil’ being kept for him. Where were the guards posted? Knowing the importance of her reconnaissance, Lucy didn’t keep him waiting. ‘Jacoby made it plain there will be no relaxation of the hunt to find you. Glory Be has been shut down tighter than a bank vault. I don’t know how you’re going to escape.’

‘I’ll figure a way out. There’s always a loophole that’s been overlooked. And I mean to find it.’ They stood facing one another, both feeling awkward, not quite knowing how to say goodbye. It was left to Hogan to make the first move. Sheepishly he removed his billfold and peeled off a couple of notes. ‘It’s the least I can do to repay your help,’ he said.

Straightaway he knew he had done the wrong thing as Lucy spurned the offer, pushing it away. ‘I don’t want your money. I did this because I think you’ve been wrongly blamed for this tragedy. No amount of money can bring those folks back. Now that I know what kind of man Elias Jacoby is, I’ll do my darndest to make him pay for his crimes.’

Hogan took her in his arms. A warm kiss was planted on her upturned mouth. There was no resistance as they clung together. Neither wanted the tender moment to end. But end it must. Stay and he was a doomed man for sure.

‘One day I’ll come back and help you dig out the proof needed to net the real culprits. And then perhaps . . .’ He left the sentence unfinished. Both of them knew the reality of their circumstances had chosen otherwise. Their lives were heading along divergent trails. A final kiss on the forehead and he slipped out of the back door. A raised hand and he was gone.

All she could do now was pray for this man to make a safe getaway – this enigmatic stranger who had suddenly entered her life, and just as quickly departed.
