‘What do you mean?’ Gina Difiore demanded.

‘I went to the hospital to question them—’

‘YOU DID WHAT?’

Ax grinned in his SUV. ‘Shall I continue?’

‘Go on,’ she said tightly.

‘I impersonated a surgeon. The cops didn’t check, didn’t compare how I looked with the surgeon’s photograph. They should’ve called the hospital to confirm my visit was necessary. If I could get through, so will Min. He knows the shooters in the hospital can identify him. He’ll kill them.’

‘Who is Min?’

‘Lee Min, Santiago’s real name.’

‘Just how many laws did you break tonight, Ax?’

‘Arrest me.’

‘Don’t tempt me,’ she growled. ‘Hold up. Stay on the line. I’m going to tear a new one in Pizaka and Chang and then those cops.’

Ax heard her brief Peyton and speak into another phone.

‘Okay—’ she began when she returned.

‘You might want to tell them to enter the room and remove the duct tape on them ... and yeah, one of the shooters needs medical attention.’

Gina swore at him, did her second-phone-call-thing and came back again. ‘Do I want to know what you did to him?’

‘No.’ Ax hung up and chuckled when she called back instantly. ‘I thought you didn’t want to know.’

‘Axton Hawke, don’t be a smartass. What did you get out of him?’

‘You go first. What did your team find out from them?’

‘Nothing,’ she said frustratedly. ‘The doctor, it might have been the same surgeon you impersonated, stopped Chang and Pizaka from questioning them. He said they were still too weak. Your turn.’

She took a while to process it when he finished briefing her. ‘You know anything of these Special Operation Forces?’

‘They are good. Looks like Min, or Santiago as we know him, and these men were planted in our country under deep cover. I am sure Min became a contract killer on Pyongyang’s orders. It gave him great cover and put everyone off from guessing his real identity.’

‘Yeah. We’ll look into that. I’m sure many of his kills will turn out to be beneficial to North Korea. Twenty gunmen,’ she said after a moment. ‘That leaves three more shooters out there.’

‘Correct. They might go after Louisa.’

‘She’s not leaving my apartment except for work. Peyton and I drop her to her office in the morning and pick her up in the evening. Once in the office, she does not leave the building. I’ll get Chang and Pizaka to question the other prisoners.’

‘They won’t talk.’

‘I know, but we still have to try. I’ll also get them to check out the Queens and Brownsville apartments.’

‘Be careful. All of them are deadly.’

‘Yeah. We won’t go into Min’s apartment right away. We’ll watch it for a few days.’

‘Chang and Pizaka will ask you how you got those addresses.’

‘FBI informant,’ she replied promptly.

‘The hospital cops will report my presence.’

‘I know you and Kael. You have already erased any CCTV images of your presence in the hospital. Chang and Pizaka’s officers will get nowhere in trying to find you.’

Ax nodded in the darkness. She does know us well. Kael will have gotten Werner to clean up the hospital’s camera feeds once he got my message.
