Lufthansa Flight LH400, Somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean

Amira had to pee. Desperately. She had hoped to hold it, not to leave the safety of her seat, but they were barely halfway through the flight and she could wait no longer. She turned to Alexis.

“I have to use the bathroom.”

“Do you want me to come with you?”

Amira shook her head. “No, I need you to stay with the children.”

Alexis nodded, looking at the two youngsters, sound asleep, the excitement of the day wearing them out, thankfully. “No problem. Take your time.”

Amira rose, heading quickly for the bathroom, trying not to look at anyone, praying she didn’t see the man who had helped murder her husband, otherwise she might create another embarrassing mess. She reached the bathroom without incident, thanking Allah there was no lineup. She quickly finished her business and splashed some cold water on her face, staring at her pale visage in the mirror.

She held out her hand.

It was shaking.

Just get to America, then you’ll be free of them.

She fixed her chador then unlocked the door, turning the handle. Someone on the other side pushed the door open, the handle ripping from her hand as she yelped, the scarred man stepping inside, placing his disfigured hand over her mouth as he shoved her back, closing the door behind him. Still gripping her face, he locked the door then raised a finger.

“You scream, you die. Understood?”

She shook out a nod, her entire body ready to give way, only his hand holding her up now.

“Do I know you?”

His question puzzled her. He had stared at her. Shouldn’t that mean he knew her? But if he didn’t recognize her, didn’t remember who she was, she might just be able to convince him he didn’t.

“You d-don’t,” she said, her voice muffled by the hand still over her mouth.

He removed it and shook his head. “No, I recognize you from somewhere and you definitely know me, the way you reacted to me looking at you.”

“Y-you frightened me. Y-you’re hand.”

He stared at her, suddenly grabbing her by the chin and shoving her head to the left, then the right, trying to get as good a look at her as possible. He pursed his lips, his nostrils flaring. “No, I’ve definitely seen your face before, and you definitely recognized me.”

She had to think quickly. Where could she possibly tell him they knew each other from, something that wouldn’t tie her back to the death of her husband. And it suddenly occurred to her. “Y-your hand. I recognize it from the bus in Hungary. You stood just in front of me. That must b-be where you saw m-me.”

He nodded slowly, still moving her chin from side to side, then glanced over at her left hand, gripping the wall.

He snatched it, squeezing the wedding ring. A sneer emerged from one side of his mouth. “You were in Al-Raqqah.” The sneer spread. “You’re the teacher. I killed your coward of a husband.”

Tears filled her eyes, she desperate to defend her husband’s honor, yet she resisted, knowing her life was in this man’s hands.
