Chapter six

Poppy

“You can’t even see the road!” I shouted over the lashing rain.

Oliver squinted through the windshield, his hands going white around the wheel.

“I can make it until the storm lets up,” he said, his voice tense. A car passed by us, and the headlights glared for a moment. “Why don’t people turn their brights off?”

“Oliver, this storm is miles long,” I told him desperately. “We need to pull over now.”

Oliver fought with the wheel for a moment, and finally, he nodded.

“There are lights up there,” he told me, nodding up ahead at the wash of colored lights over the wet windshield. “What is that?”

“It looks like a diner,” I said, a feeling of relief washing over me. “It feels like we’re in the middle of nowhere. Pull in there, Oli. There are plenty of parking spots.”

The nickname was a slip, and my face went bright red. I could just feel it, burning a blush down my neck and across my chest. Oliver was smirking, but I just pretended I didn’t notice. He pulled into the parking lot, and thunder crashed all around us, making me jump. Oliver opened the door for me, and we ran inside, seeking shelter from the storm.

The little restaurant was one where you seated yourself. Oliver shook out his coat and tucked it over the back of one of the booths closest to the door. I scooted to the other side, and the leather was cold against my damp jeans. I wrapped my arms around myself. It wasn’t like autumn in California, where it's never truly cold. The combination of seventy-degree weather and chilly rain had me shivering. Oliver was watching me.

He waved the waitress over to us. “Can we get two coffees over here, please?”

“I’m okay. It’s just the rain,” I told him, shaking off his concern. “She seems busy.”

“Sweetheart, this place is never busy,” the older woman said, giving me a big grin. She reminded me of Anne for some reason. “Other than the coffee, what else can I get you two?”

“I’ll have a burger with fries,” Oliver said, giving her a charming grin.

I resisted the urge to roll my eyes. “I’ll just have the same. Thank you.” She left and I looked at Oliver. “You just can’t help it, can you?”

“What?” He asked, feigning innocence and running a hand through his thick, dark hair.

“What?” I mocked him in a deep voice, and he laughed.

“I didn’t do anything,” Oliver said with a shrug. “I just ordered a hamburger.”

“You just made that woman wish she was fifteen years younger,” I commented, putting my menu away.

“Well, who says I don’t like older women?”

“Do you?” I asked and then shook my head. “Don’t answer that. It’s inappropriate.”

Oliver looked at me like he was trying to ponder some complicated riddle. I had never thought of myself as complicated or difficult to figure out. I just kept to myself. I needed to distance myself from Oliver, and knowing about his dating preferences wasn’t helping.

“It’s not,” Oliver finally said. “But personally, I don’t have a preference.
