I’m so cold.

I don’t go after him.

Even now, hours later, I don’t. I can’t. What can I say if he doesn’t want to listen?

Honestly, I don’t blame him.

How guilty did I look? God, I must have looked as if I was robbing the poor box blind. If our roles had been reversed, I’d have probably been way more furious with him than he was with me. Then he’d acted, I should say. Because I know Blackwell, and he was extremely furious with me. He just had it all on a tight leash.

My phone’s beeping. With heaviness pervading my limbs, I pick it up.

Sorry. Piper. Of course it’s her, not my husband. Do you want to come over and get dinner? Or I can come there? Or we can go out?

A second later she texts again.

The movie was so good. A dystopian love triangle. And there were FOUR of them. FOUR movies. How did I miss out on them? I’ve watched the first two. They’re the best, but now I’m bored, and Adam’s been here and gone, and I haven’t seen Forsythe. Where are you?

In spite of everything, I smile. I’m halfway through texting her back when the phone rings.

“Nix all that!” she says the moment I answer, and I hate myself for the flash of disappointment at not hearing Blackwell’s voice instead.

Why would it be? He’s really not the phone-call sort unless he absolutely has to use it.

“You sound echoey.” I hold the phone tight to my ear, not bothering to find my Bluetooth ear buds or putting the call on speaker. “And quiet.”

For a moment, Piper doesn’t answer. Then she sighs. “I’m in the bathroom. He turned up with some dinner. Something healthy. I didn’t tell him I’m sick.”

“Well, maybe he’s that kind of guy. A healthy eater. Or he’s intuitive.” Or a stalker. But this isn’t the time for dark humor, so I keep that to myself.

“Please! I’m going to go and see—”

“Don’t do anything dumb. Do I need to have a talk to you about the birds and the bees?”

“Harper!” She hisses. Then suddenly, she gains the wisdom of a sage. “I wouldn’t even know how to be that dumb, and I’m not that sort of girl. If I haven’t started sowing oats, I’m not going to at my great age. I have to go!”

And she hangs up.

Honestly, I’ve a good mind to get that car Blackwell insists is there for every single trip I take, and go to her place to see this man for myself.

I don’t, though. Instead, I fill about two minutes putting the rest of my things away.

Finally, I lie down and try to nap.
