Chapter eleven

James

I sat in stunned silence after Samantha left. How long had she wanted to say those things to me? It hurt more than I wanted to admit.

As Sam had told me the story, the half-buried memories from that night came to the surface. I’d been sitting in my dorm at Julliard, shooting baskets at the small hoop over my door when I should have been running my lines for my audition.

My phone rang. It had been Sam calling. I thought it was odd that she’d call me out of the blue. Part of me had worried, wondering if something had happened to someone in her family or my parents. But it was Sam herself who had been in distress.

“The prom is tonight, and… and my friend set me up with a guy for prom, but he backed out, and I have no one to go with. Do you… Would you mind…”

I could hear the unshed tears in her voice. Though I’d never thought of Sam in that way, I hated hearing that she was hurting. We’d grown up together, and I couldn’t believe her date could be such a jerk.

“You want me to take you?”

She cleared her throat several times before saying, “Yes. Please.”

“Sure. I haven’t got anything planned for tonight. I’ll come down by train and meet you at your house, okay?”

I’d heard her sniffing on the line, followed by a soft, “okay.”

“Tell you what, Sam, I’ll take you to The Market Table. How’s that?”

“Really?”

Hearing the hope and happiness in her tone made me smile. Taking her somewhere fancy was the least I could do after this idiot had treated her so badly.

“Absolutely. What time does the dance start?”

“Eight. It’s at the Astoria Inn.”

“That fancy old hotel in town? The one with the big ballroom?”

“Yeah.”

“Okay, we’ll do dinner at seven and then head over to the dance. I won’t have a limo or anything, but I can borrow my dad’s Acura.”

She’d let out a little giggle. “That’s fine. Thanks, James. I really appreciate it.”

I’d just finished changing into my suit when I’d gotten a call from Alex.

“Hey, I heard you were taking Sam to prom. Did she ask you or something?”

“Yeah, her date bailed. I’m taking her to dinner before the dance. She sounded pretty upset when she called.”

“Hmmm. Well, I just heard from her, and her date came through, so don’t worry about it. Thanks for looking out for her, though.”

I remembered frowning as he’d said that. Something about it seemed off, and I was tempted to just go down to Connecticut anyway.

“You sure? She sounded like he’d definitely bailed. Besides, why didn’t she call me?”

“She’s just about to leave with her date, so she asked me to call. Really, James, thanks for looking out for her, but she’s good.”

“Okay. Um, thanks for letting me know, I guess.”

The whole conversation was weird, but I figured Alex had settled it. He’d always been that way, bossy and pushy. He was the oldest out of the three of us, and always took it upon himself to direct everything.
