NAHUM

A contemporary of Jeremiah and Zephaniah, Nahum predicts the judgment of Nineveh (some 125 years after Jonah’s missionary trip via the big fish). The people had returned to their old ways! The God who is slow to anger, declares Nahum, has finally had it with Nineveh’s (and all of Assyria’s) evil ways.

A Key Moment in Nahum:

• A psalm of God’s majesty (Nahum 1)

HABAKKUK

It was a dark time in Judah. A time of violence and corruption, injustice and neglect, and much suffering. And there, on the horizon, was lurking the invasion by Babylonia. In the midst of all this conflict, Habakkuk struggles with the question of why God was allowing this to happen. The form of the book is a conversation between the prophet and the Lord. Habakkuk asks the question, “Why did you allow this?” God’s answer is simple—judgment upon the corrupt leaders of Judah. But are the Babylonians any better? No. God reveals that they too will be judged. The book ends with Habakkuk’s prayer of faith and trust.

A Key Moment in Habakkuk:

• The righteous will live by faith (Habakkuk 2)

ZEPHANIAH

Zephaniah was a distant member of the royal family who prophesied during the early reign of Josiah. He assured the people that Judah would be judged and looked toward the coming day of the Lord. Since Josiah became a good king, Zephaniah’s message appears to have gotten through!
