They all left the inn under an early morning sky. None of them spoke for a long time as they walked along the main road south. A dull ache ran through Owenâs head, his thoughts a current of frustration directed towards Amias.
They turned off the main road after a while, away from the wagons and horse-riders, and into a wooded area. They could see only one wagon, far up ahead, and the trees created a canopy over them.
âI havenât seen Lou again since the other night,â Amias said. âBut weâll keep strictly to the back roads in case heâs reported me to region soldiers.â
The air stirred, blowing a surge of leaves their way. Owen scanned the trees. Then came the sound of hooves.
He looked behind them, his eyes landing on a blonde-haired woman clad in leather armor atop a gray horse. His heart dropped into his stomach. He backed away until he reached Amias and Colt.
âWho is she?â Owen demanded.
Amias stepped forward. âIâll take care of this,â he muttered.
âNot another step, Amias,â the woman started, halting her horse.
In response, Amias stopped and held up his hands.
âBy order of the Legion, you will be apprehended and confined within Alacor for treason,â she said.
Owen narrowed his eyes. He knew his friend was wanted, though he had not known what for.
âWe can work something out,â Amias started.
The woman fixed her eyes on him. âItâs too late for that. You chose to run like a coward. Now stand down, or Iâll use force.â
âI doubt you have it in you, Rhielle. You were always such a charming pupil. Or has too much time spent with Wielders changed you that much?â
She pursed her lips. âThis isnât about me. What did you expect? That youâd drop your allegiance to the Legion and escape without trial?â
âHeâs not going anywhere,â Colt piped up, drawing out his blade as he stood before Amias.
The woman pulled back, looking hesitant for a moment, but then she pulled a star-shaped weapon out from her belt. âYouâre a fool to protect him. Anyone who defends him will be brought in as well. This is your final warning.â
Several more seconds passed, and still Colt did not lower his blade. Owenâs hand went to the hilt of his dagger, but he did not draw it out. He swallowed hard. He did not want to hurt this woman, but he also did not want her to take Amias, no matter how angry he was at him.
âStand down!â she said.
âNo.â Coltâs face was smug.
The woman shook her head. The steel in her hand glinted in the light as she raised it, and then a sudden rush of air flew between them all.
âShit!â Colt yelled out as he staggered back. A small, sharp star punctured his leg through the fabric of his trousers. âNot gonna lie, didnât think youâd have it in you.â He seethed.
Owenâs heart beat wildly as he looked from Coltâs wound to the woman. When he saw her draw out another star, Owen put up his hands.
