CHAPTER 18

The first one awake, Will walked through the sleeping house with mortality on his mind. He thought hard about his moral compass. He had always thought he had one. After watching both parents succumb to cancer in his high school years, he knew he wanted to use the insurance money to educate himself and follow his interest into scientific research to help people. And he did.

Once the first success with a break-through medicine came about, he was interested in doing even more. With Charlotte’s encouragement, he moved on and up to use his natural leadership skills and scientific know-how to launch more and more beneficial therapeutics. He felt driven to reach more people. And he did.

After he understood the machinations of the US pharmaceutical industry, he knew he needed to learn more about the industry beyond its borders. He took positions that would expose him to worldwide markets and how he could maximize the successes of medical breakthroughs and make them available to even more people. And he did.

Now, on the threshold of the top job at BioteKem, he was in a position to influence the future of one of the largest biomedical companies in the world. To help even more people.

He had enriched himself along the way. But his lifestyle wasn’t over the top. Not like many who lived extravagant lives and paid more attention to stock prices than to their R&D investment. Chet Sutherland was the role model Will wanted to work with. He respected the man and grew to enjoy and thrive in their relationship. It was Chet who recruited Will into his role and his trust. Chet was a legend in the industry and the only man in it who Will wished to emulate. He wouldn’t consciously do anything to damage that relationship. He remained puzzled about how things went awry, but any hope of a possible chance to clear the air with Chet seemed out of reach.

As Chet mentored Will and the knowledge transfer was complete, it was apparent Chet was lingering a bit, perhaps because he was worried about becoming irrelevant or because he would miss working with Will. They started to joke about it.

“Hell, Will, I could drop dead tomorrow and the company would be fine.” Chet had his hand on Will’s shoulder and said, “You’re ready, son.”

Will hated to face the truth. Before Chet had called him out for whatever he had done, he was impatient to be on top. Where was his moral compass now? And if Chet died, how could Will live without his forgiveness?

Once in the office, he was still pondering how he had so damaged Chet’s faith in him when he heard a knock on his door. He looked up to see Pam Shields, fresh-faced and eager.

“Pam, good morning.” He cleared his throat.

“Just wanted to follow up on the article. Did you have a chance to read it?”

“Yes.” Will was glad to get this over with. “I don’t see any need for BioteKem to make any comment.
