Chapter Seventeen
Two days later, Betty still had not responded to Billyâs question about continuing their friendship. He had not contacted her again, leaving the ball in her court. He was patient, which was a plus, but she knew that he would not like her answer.
She sat near the exit of the terminal, where she expected to see Nikki and Darryl. Betty had picked up her phone and read Billyâs last message a few times. Each time she put the phone down, shaking her head.
She was reaching for the phone again when she saw her baby coming through the doors. Pushing the button to open the hatchback of her SUV, she got out of the car. âMom!â Nikki exclaimed, meeting her on the curb with her arms open.
Betty hugged her child tightly. âIâm so happy youâre home. I missed you.â She released Nikki, grabbing her face, she kissed her cheek. While she greeted Nikki, Darryl put their luggage in her car. Then he hugged Betty. âItâs good to see you too,â she said when she let him go.
Once they were under way, Betty asked, âAre you guys hungry? We can stop anywhere along the way.â
They both sighed heavily, but it was Nikki who answered. âWe just want to get to my place and sleep for a while.â
âNo problem,â Betty told them. âI figured you might be exhausted, so I went to the store yesterday and bought a few things and took them to your apartment. So, there is food in your fridge.â
âThat was thoughtful of you,â Darryl said from the back seat.
âAre you going to stay with Nikki, or am I taking you to your house?â
âHeâs staying with me,â Nikki replied for him.
âMy dad told me not to go home until heâs finished with his mission. Ellaâs still with Uncle Terry,â Darryl added.
âI guess that does make sense,â Betty said quietly.
âHave you spoken with Dad?â Nikki asked, reclining the seat a bit.
âI spoke with him a few times.â
âI talked to him just before we got on our flight. After the engagement party, we should all get together to discuss the wedding on Sunday before he goes home.. We could have lunch together.â
âHave you picked a date yet?â
âWe were thinking that we should have it during spring before it gets too hot.â Nikki adjusted the seat so that she lay back a bit.
âSounds like a great plan to me.â Betty glanced back at Darryl
âWe chose April seventeenth,â Darryl said as he lay his head against the headrest.
Nikki and Darryl were both quiet after that. Betty glanced at them a few times. They both had dozed off. She smiled to herself. She was sure that Nikki had found a good man. So have you, but your stubbornness is going to run him off. Shut up. She mentally told her subconscious. Donât get mad at me because you wonât face your issues. Billy is not Simon, and you know it. Heâs already shown you how thoughtful he is by giving you the silver box and the flowers.
