âYou OK?â I asked Ruby.
âYes, of course.â She pushed a curl of hair out of her face and smiled at me. âWhy wouldnât I be?â Turning away, she busied herself looking through the stack of records next to the gramophone â Iâd bought some over from the camp. âWhat would you like to listen to next? Thereâs Glenn Miller, or Mozartââ
âI donât mind,â I said. âYou choose.â
It was the first time weâd seen each other in three weeks. Our time off was being cancelled left, right and centre as our training ramped up, and although the high-ups werenât saying as much, word around the camp was that the invasion of Europe was imminent. A lot of the guys were excited about it. I wasnât sure how to feel. Part of me wanted it over with; mostly I was dreading it, wondering what was waiting for us on the other side of the English Channel and knowing that when it happened Iâd have to leave Ruby behind. And I was scared what would happen to Meggie and Ma if I got killed.
I watched as Ruby picked up a record, put it down again. âLook, you sure nothingâs bothering you?â
âI said, Iâm fine.â
Her sharp tone stung me. âWell, youâre not acting like it.â
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âWhat I mean is, youâve been like a bear with a goddamn sore head ever since I got here. I thought youâd be glad to see me.â
She put the record down with a sigh. âI am. Itâs just â oh, I donât know.â
âSo tell me.â
âThis.â She waved a hand around. âUs. Everything.â
âWhat about us?â A cold finger was tracing down my spine. Weâd been apart for too long â sheâd been thinking â changed her mind.
âWhatâs going to happen to us, Sam? After you go to Europe, I mean?â
âWell, I dunno. I guess Iâm gonna try my best to make it back over here to you. And then we can make plans, if thatâs what you want.â
âI do want that â of course I do â but then what?â
âWhat do you mean?â I said.
She sat down, her shoulders slumping. âHow are we going to make it work, Sam? With Father, I mean? Iâll have to tell him about us, andââ
âSo whatâs he gonna do? Tell you you canât see me? Ban us from getting married?â
The word slipped out of my mouth before I could stop it. Rubyâs face kind of froze. But Iâd said it now; there was no going back. âI mean, is that what you want? For us to get married? Because youâre nineteen. He canât stop us.â
âHe can. You have to be twenty-one here to marry without parental permission. Youâll be all right â on paper youâre old enough already â butââ
I got up and went over to her, crouching down in front of her and taking her hands in mine. What had only been a vague, unspoken thought â a hope for some distant time in the future â was suddenly real.
