Time Management in Critical Care

Critical care nursing is very different from floor nursing. It is less task management on multiple patients and more in-depth big picture thinking on two patients. The stakes are a bit higher and everything is time sensitive. Your high stress level is not because you have a lot of tasks to complete, it’s because people are acutely decompensating and it is your job to immediately address it. It’s a very different kind of stress, but stress nonetheless.

You can have patients with subarachnoid hemorrhages who are suddenly developing hydrocephalus, septic patients on four different drips, active GI bleeds profusely bleeding from their rectum, patients with impellas that cannot move a muscle, and very emotional family surrounding everyone all the time. Oh, and the guy next door has basically been coding for the last two hours.

First, I will go over some points of enlightenment, and then I will discuss my ideal timeline.
