Chapter Eight

That summer I began to see many people that knew they were loved by God and treated others as special because they saw themselves and others as special. You could see that Jane knew she was special, because she never blamed anyone for her broken back. She always treated others as special.

Back to school in the fourth grade wasn't much better than the third grade. When I got to the fifth grade, I heard that we now had a counselor at the school three days a week. The counselor's name was Mrs. LaDow.

When I told my parents about the new counselor, my Mother said, "You should talk to her; it could help you."

Daddy said, "Yes, I agree, it could be really good for you."

I did talk to Mrs. LaDow several times. I didn't tell her about my brother and the elves, because I didn't think she'd believe me. I did tell her what I had noticed about people. "It seems that when people feel loved, they don't tease others."

"Mrs. LaDow said, "That is very observant of you, and it is so true." We talked about some of the different experiences I'd had.

I told her about my friend Jane. "Jane was in gym one day and another girl jumped on her shoulders; she landed straight down on the cement floor. Jane was out of school for several weeks with a broken back."

Mrs. LaDow said "Yes, I know about that."

I said, "Well, I really admire her. She is teased a lot and she usually just ignores them. But one day we were eating and talking in the cafeteria when Tom and Jim walked by and said something mean to her."

Jane responded, "I hope you never have a broken back!" She has rarely been teased since.

It helped me a lot to talk to Mrs. LaDow. I had spoken with my parents about some of the things I observed in the past, but somehow it was really helpful to speak with her.

Danny and I often talked about what we wanted to do when we grew up.

I told Danny, "I want to be a school counselor so that I can help others in school."

Danny, with his loves for animals, said, "I want to be an animal doctor, so I can take care of dogs, cats, and maybe some birds or even horses."
