Itâs already eight forty, and I just got home. If I want to make it to Roseâs house by nine, Iâm going to have to book itâand that means no shower. Thankfully, I didn't sweat a lot on the walk back to the house, and I wonât smell too bad while sitting in the car with Rose for two hours. I quickly throw on a polo shirt and a pair of nice khaki shorts before I walk out to the living room.
My mom is sitting on the sofa watching a movie. I plop down on the couch next to her and she wraps her arms over my shoulders. âHey, sweetie.â
âHey.â
âHow was work?â
I nod my head. âIt was good.â
âIâm glad. And what are you up to now, since youâre all dressed up?â
I didnât think it was that obvious. Itâs not like Iâm wearing a suit and tie. Maybe it was the way I rushed inside to get dressed. If it was me and the guys, weâd probably just steal a spot off one of the sand dunes. That way you donât have to pay or worry about being late. Of course, you donât get to hear the movie either, but thatâs not why we go.
âI was actually thinking about going and seeing a movie at the drive-in. Can I borrow the car?â
âOf course. Whoâs going?â
I clear my throat. âJust me and a friend.â
She pauses the movie, and when she turns to face me, thereâs a huge grin on her face. âReally? And do I know this friend?â
âI donât think so. Weâve never really hung out before this week.â
âI see,â she says, still smiling. âJust make sure youâre home by curfew, and that you treat your friend with respect.â
I roll my eyes. âI will.â
She hands me the keys and Iâm just about to open the front door when she calls out. âAnd, Adam?â
I stop and face her. âYeah?â
âIâm really glad youâre going out. Youâre allowed to have fun every once in a while, you know.â
I nod. âYeah, I know.â
âThen, Iâll see you tonight.â
âSee ya.â
With ten minutes to get to Roseâs house, I quickly walk into the warm evening air. I think thereâs just enough time to get to her house and back to the drive-in before the movie starts, but thatâs before I spot Gisele sitting at the rusted bistro set that is in front of the duplex.
Sheâs watching something on her phone but sets it down when she notices me and smiles. âHey.â
âHey.â
âWhere you going?â
I know the question is probably friendly, but knowing that Iâm going on a date with Rose makes it feel accusatory. My hands are sweaty as I try to jiggle the keys in what I hope is a casual manner. âNowhere.â
Giseleâs brows lower.
I shrug and try to play it cool. âJust out for a little bit.â
âBy yourself?â
âUh-huh.â I nod my head.
âDo you want company?â
âIâm good,â I answer quickly.
Her eyes narrow into slits. âIs everything okay, Adam?â
For a minute, I worry she knows Iâm going out with Rose. But then I realize the idea of her knowing my secrets is laughable.
