INCIâTHE HOLY GRAIL OF INGREDIENTS
INCI stands for International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients. It is a list maintained by the Personal Care Products Council in the International Cosmetic Ingredient Dictionary and Handbook, available electronically as wINCI. Basically, the INCI list is used internationally to recognize and identify cosmetic ingredients.
A uniform single system of labelling an ingredient to ensure transparency, compliance with laws and regulations, avoid confusion, misidentification and to track the safety and regulatory status of ingredients on a global basis regardless of its country of origin. It is a worldwide science-based dictionary.
So please always check the INCI list of ingredients at the back of the box.
BUY DO NOT BUY
If the INCI list says 100 per cent of a single ingredient, it could be an oil, floral water, powder or herb Anything in plastic packagingâbe kind to our planet because there is no planet B
If the full INCI list of ingredients is printed on the box If the label says: âkey ingredientsâ it usually means the full list has not been printed and the brand may not want you to know what else is lurking in the bottle
If it says cold-pressed, virgin, certified organic, wild harvest Anything with the ingredients and their INCI names that I have listed and explained in detail in the chapter Clean Ingredients. Or, later in this book
If it says âNot tested on animalsâ or has a âcruelty freeâ symbol or certification on the packaging It you do not see ânot tested on animalsâ or any âcruelty freeâ certification on the packaging
If you see âVeganâ on the packaging If you see âcarmineâ, âcrimson lakeâ, âCI 75470â, âcochineal extractâ, ânatural red 4â
âBHTâ any type of formaldehyde, phthalates and any of the INCI list in the chapter Clean Ingredients. Not.
Science is ever-evolving, learning and making as many mistakes as breakthroughs. Remember when scientists said oils were bad for your skin and health? Fats were bad for your health and weight loss? Then coconut became the darling of the health industry and the answer to good skin, metabolism, health, weight loss and just about everything. Of late, I see a controversy on coconut doing the rounds, claiming that it is poison for our health. Sadly, it confuses the hell out of laypeople. This is why I follow Ayurvedic wisdom and indigenous knowledge, doing my own research as a consumer and following my own common sense when I eventually have to make a purchase.
Something has bothered me for long, and I want to share it here with you. Behind the shine and shimmer of the beauty industry lie decades of animal cruelty and unethical practices. Carmineâis a pigment of bright-red colour produced from insects such as the cochineal. Carmine may be prepared from cochineal, by boiling dried insects in water to extract carminic acid.
More than 70,000 of these beetles are killed to produce just one pound of dye found in many lipsticks. It is good to see many brands going vegan but I always check the ingredient list to ensure these are not listed.
