“I’ll call Hamish” she decided, thinking that simply by hearing Hamish’s fatherly Scottish burr and parental words of wisdom would put her heart and her mind at rest. Just hearing Hamish’s confident and benevolent voice would be just the medicine she needed.

CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Hamish Falconer was tired. After a day of playing with his grandson and then hitting nine holes of golf, he looked forward to nothing more than his pot of earl gray tea and cinnamon scones. He was just about to sit down to his favorite afternoon treat, when he saw his phone flash and heard the shrill vibration.

“Oh, not now.” He was in mid pour, but he finished pouring the steaming aromatic tea into his old, chipped Castle Loch mug. He reluctantly got up from his chair, and when he saw Charlotte’s name flash on the screen, he quickly forgot about the comforting tea and scones.

“Charlotte, lass! So good to hear from you! How have you been?” He sat himself down in his old leather chair and stirred a few drops of cream into his tea.

“Hamish, it’s so good to hear your voice. Sounds like you’re in the next room instead of on the other side of the Atlantic!”

“So good to hear yours, too, Char,” he said tenderly, as he put his cup down onto the saucer.

“I’m sorry I haven’t called sooner. I have been so incredibly busy, and well, tomorrow is the grand opening. I guess I just need to hear your voice.”

“Oh, Char, I’m sure everything looks wonderful. And just remember, you built a small ladies empire from a musty old basement. I am highly confident that Rory’s old store looks just as incredible.”

“I’ll text you some pictures tomorrow. I have a kind of a party planned here—you know, lots of coffee, cookies, cake—oh, no scones—I’ll have to see if the bakery can make those. But it looks pretty inviting and I’m ready to go. Oh, and everyone here has been so kind to me. I’ve got great neighbors down at what they call the Beach Block, and I’ve made friends with a woman and she thinks she may know you.”

“Know me! Who in that part of the world would know me?” He laughed as he bit into one of his scones.

“Her name is Tatiana Dulka. I mentioned you to her the other day, and it seemed like she knew you, and then she said she remembered you as a friend of Rory’s and that you had met once or twice.”

The scone fell from Hamish Falconer’s trembling hand.

Tatiana Dulka?

“Hamish? Are you still there?” He barely heard Charlotte’s voice on the other end of the phone.

“Yes, yes, I am. I’m sorry, Char, but I don’t recall a woman named Tatiana. Maybe she has me confused with someone else.”

“I don’t think so. She described you pretty well, Scottish accent, handsome.”

Hamish could hear laughter in Charlotte’s voice. He wanted to change the subject. Immediately.

“Well, she probably has me confused with another friend of Rory’s. He and Violet always had relatives and friends from Dundee or Glasgow flying up over to Maine.
