Sunday morning Lily spent time in the yard with the dogs. Bodie’s energy wasn’t at full throttle yet, but he was making progress. The dogs played and followed her as she cut fresh flowers for the cottages. Her aunt’s garden was gorgeous and healthy, with a variety of blooms.

She put together the ingredients for soup and started the slow cooker. She checked the downstairs common area and placed a vase of flowers on the table to give it a more welcoming look.

Along with filling the beverage station with lemon water, she made fresh iced tea. She added a plate of cookies to the welcome table downstairs and gave it all one last look.

A few minutes before three, her phone chimed with a camera notification, and she saw a large SUV in the driveway, following the signs for parking. She put Bodie in his crate, made sure the door to the downstairs was closed, promised Fritz she’d be right back, and hurried to greet her guests.

Women were climbing out of the oversized vehicle, when she waved and hollered, “Hello there.”

The driver, dressed for an upscale lunch, waved at Lily and walked to meet her. “Hi, I’m Amy. I made the reservation for us.”

Lily extended her hand. “Nice to meet you, Amy. If you’d like to follow me, we’ll get you checked in and settled. Your friends are welcome to come with you or rest in the yard.

Amy relayed the message as the women wrestled their luggage from the cargo area. She followed Lily along the path to the downstairs door. “Oh, I love your yard. Beautiful flowers.”

“Thank you. The credit goes to my late aunt. She had quite the eye for gardening.” She guided Amy inside and offered her a cookie.

“Oh, no,” she shook her head with a look of fear. “If I look at a cookie, I’ll gain ten pounds.”

Lily eyed her perfect figure, manicured nails, and her ombre colored hair. “Are you covering all three cottages?”

“Yes, it’s my treat. A bit of girlfriend fun. We had our twenty-fifth high school reunion this weekend, and I organized this extended event to celebrate with my best friends.”

“Sounds wonderful,” Lily said, as she finished the credit card transaction. She handed Amy a small folio and offered to take the keys down and open the cottages for them.

They found the other five women sitting around the fire pit, their luggage parked on the pathway. “Girls,” said Amy, “This is Lily. She’s the owner.”

The women introduced themselves. Lily committed them to memory using techniques she had practiced at work for twenty years. Sultry Sherry, Chubby Carrie, Barbie Bigmouth, Plain Pam, and Anxious Abby. She sized up people based on her initial impression and gave them a nickname designed to trigger her memory by association. Amy was the easiest. Awesome Amy.

“Welcome to Glass Beach Cottage. I hope you’ll enjoy it here as much as we do. When I say we, I mean my golden retriever, Fritz, and my new puppy Bodie. You’ll see them roaming around, and they’re both super friendly.
