There was no getting away from Kylie. That much was clear when Jagger started his SUV Monday morning, only to have her voice surround him.

“—and that’s why we can’t have nice things. Back to you, Chris.”

He’d caught the tail end of her newscast, unfortunately, but it was enough to let him know she’d done what he suggested. She was reading the news like she was speaking to a close friend.

But more than that, she sounded amazing.

Saturday should have been tough on him, but he had to admit, he’d enjoyed every second of it. They’d focused on work, even while they were eating the sandwiches they ordered delivered to the lobby. Although battling his attraction to Kylie had been tough, there was an ease that came with working alongside her. He found he liked her company.

When he left Kylie around two, Jagger found he actually missed her. He met up with some buddies—something he’d planned for weeks—but Kylie weighed heavily on his mind.

She lingered in his head all through Sunday, too, even though he didn’t see her as he headed in and out of the building throughout the day. But he found himself hoping to run into her every time those elevator doors opened.

“Good morning,” Jagger said to Wendy, the woman who worked the front desk. His voice had a little too much pep for this time of morning. If Wendy noticed, she didn’t show it.

But his smile quickly faded when he entered the main office and saw Kylie. She was standing at her desk, staring at her laptop, which was propped on her left hand. The way she frowned at the screen, her brow furrowed and her mouth turned down at the corners, told him she was beyond stressed. Maybe not just stressed, but…upset?

“How’s it going?” He slowed to a stop near her, trying to get a glimpse of the screen. But then he felt intrusive, so he returned his attention to her troubled face.

He wasn’t intrusive. He wanted to help. He wanted to step in between her and whatever it was that had given her that expression.

“Oh.” Kylie looked over at him as though just noticing he’d walked in. She seemed to have forgotten where she was for a second. “Something just came over the wire. It’s…I can’t really cover it. I think it would be a conflict of interest.”

She returned her attention to the screen, then turned the laptop so he could see it. Jagger stepped forward, hands in his pockets, and took a peek.

Country music star sued.

“Not just one song, but all his songs,” Kylie said. “Some producer is saying his latest album is a rip-off of a bunch of songs he’s written.”

Who? That was the word on the tip of Jagger’s tongue. But it only took a millisecond for his brain to catch up to what was happening here. Luke Kelly, that was who.

“You don’t have to cover that, of course,” Jagger said. “It’s entertainment news. We don’t do entertainment. Only national and local news.”

“Country music is local news.
