GETTING THERE

From Seattle, drive I-90 east to exit 47. Turn left and, after passing under the highway, turn left again and reach the trailhead in 0.3 mile (elev. 1900 ft). Privy available.

ON THE TRAIL

While Kaleetan Lake is one of the least visited lakes along the I-90 corridor, Getting there involves passing some of the area’s busiest bodies of water. Expect plenty of company for the first several miles—you’ll slowly lose your fellow trail users the farther into wilderness you venture.

Start on the well-beaten path to Pratt Lake, wasting no time heading up. At 1 mile, stay left at the Granite Mountain Trail junction (elev. 2500 ft). Steadily gaining elevation, traverse steep slopes and cross several creeks high above Talapus Creek. At 2.9 miles, cross the wilderness boundary. At 3.3 miles, come to the Talapus Lake junction (elev. 3750 ft), an alternative approach.

Stay right, crossing more creeks and angling high above a snug valley cradling Olallie Lake, visible below. Mount Rainier is now visible too, peeking above the moth-eaten (logged, actually) forested ridges to the south. At 4.4 miles, reach a junction with the Mount Defiance Trail (elev. 4175 ft) on a ridge crest.
