You cannot tell from appearances if water is safe to drink, so your best bet is to treat all water in the wilderness. However, if you are in a survival situation, water treatment is secondary to hydration.

Heart attacks: Statistically, heart attacks are one of the leading causes of fatalities in the backcountry. Middle-aged men who haven’t stayed in hiking shape but try to recapture their youthful glory by attacking a big hike or peak climb seem to be the ones most susceptible to this risk. The main way to reduce your exposure is through lifestyle choices: Maintain a healthy weight and a good level of physical fitness; avoid habits that predispose you to problems, such as smoking; make sure your blood pressure is controlled; and watch your exertion levels by choosing activities appropriate for your fitness, age, and ability. And be honest with yourself: Does your profile fit into that of a person at risk for heart attacks? If so, you should be very careful about the type of backcountry trip you tackle.

Hunger: Food is the least of your worries. People can survive weeks without food, so although going hungry can make you uncomfortable—okay, miserable—you will be fine in the short term if you run out of things to eat.
