Chapter Thirteen

Kai rolled over and stared at the empty space next to him. It had been two days since Trina had left with Zeke. It had taken a bit to arrange and May needed a few days to alter her schedule, but it was done. He and Marco should have had some time together now, except it didn’t seem to be working out like that. Marco had seemed to take forever to shower in his own room last night—as he had done every night—to the point Kai was almost asleep when he had come back. He remembered being pulled into Marco’s arms and being hushed, but nothing else. He’d been gone when Maddox had woken up a little after five and Kai had missed him immediately. Kai didn’t expect to see him much today either, between his regular clinic duties and the fact one of the other omegas had been threatening to go into labor for the past week.

In fact, he’d barely seen Marco since he’d rescued Trina. Kai was so happy Marco had found his sister, and not for the first time wondered what Garth and Ellie were doing. If they were happy. If they ever thought of him.

He didn’t fool himself that his dad ever did. He was probably glad he didn’t have to have the constant reminder he had an omega for a son. His mom had been loving when he was younger, but even she had changed when the new alpha had taken over. She’d stopped sticking up for him. He supposed it had been hard and she had Ellie to worry about, but how could parents suddenly stop loving their children because of how they were born? He knew it happened, but it made no sense to him. He would never stop loving Maddox, no matter what.

His belly rumbled a little and Kai tried to remember what he had eaten yesterday. Maybe he was hungry. Maybe he could have a hot chocolate with Emmett? Dinah made it with extra cream. He swallowed quickly, his stomach suddenly not liking that idea. He swallowed again when his stomach really didn’t like that idea and he just managed to bolt into the bathroom and make it to the toilet before he threw up.

Crap.

Which was his first thought after he’d rinsed his mouth out, but before he’d made it back to bed. Okay, so the likelihood he was pregnant was next to zero. He’d never been sick—morning or otherwise—with Maddox, but he wasn’t surprised his belly was acting up. It was stress. He brushed his teeth, went and sat down gingerly on the bed, and reached for the bottle of water there. Maddox was stirring, so he took a couple of sips and decided to forgo a shower until later and just get them both dressed. He was meeting Emmett and Darriel. Darriel wanted desperately to go outside, so Sam, the new beta, had said he would simply carry him.
