Chapter 4

a

Mike

"CIAO, MIKE!" MARIA, the owner of Nanna’s Italian Ristorante, waves as I pass through. "Everyone is in the back."

Weaving through waiters balancing precariously loaded trays, I spot Anthony laughing at a large round table by the window. My stomach rumbles at the sight of the freshly baked bread and dishes of dipping oil dotting the table.

Anthony glances up and grins as I near the table. "Hey, Pops!"

Dawson, Steven, and Jeffrey chime in with greetings while flagging down a waiter. Within moments, my wine glass is full, and the conversation continues.

"So, Zadddy Mike," Steven arches a brow, "care to tell us where you disappeared to last night?"

"I have no idea what you're talking about," I reply breezily, hoping to avoid further questions.

"Don't play coy!" Jeffrey exclaims. "We turned around and you were gone. Poof! Vanished into thin air."

"Magic trick," I quip, eliciting laughter from the group. "A magician never reveals his secrets."

"I think Zaddy had a hookup." Steven proclaims. "Look at him. He looks verrrry relaxed."

I chuckle, taking a sip of my wine. "Just had some business to attend to, nothing too exciting."

Dawson leans in, his eyes glinting with curiosity. "What kind of business?"

I shrug. "Just some server stuff. You know how it is."

Madeline joins us, and the conversation shifts to last minute changes. The wedding venue was able to accommodate the overflow. Anthony looks at his bride to be with pure adoration.

Madeline continues discussing the logistics of the ceremony, but my mind is elsewhere. I can't help but notice the way Anthony takes her hand in his and gently strokes it with his thumb. It's as if nothing else in the world matters to him but her.

I'm not sure I ever felt the same way about his mother. She was my girlfriend, but it was mostly for the sex. I was 19.

Almost 33 years later, and I'm not sure I've ever looked at a woman in the same way I look at her.

Janelle's beautiful, laughing face flashes in my mind, and I grin. Again.

"Pops?"

"What?"

"Sorry, Mr. Fiore." Madeline grins sheepishly. "I think everyone's eyes are glazing over."

Dawson returns from the bar with a huge grin on his face. "You will never guess who's in the main room."

The guys take turns calling out the names of women they all know, but Dawson shakes his head at each one. "Nope, it's someone better. The hot librarian from the Central Branch."

"No way." Steven cranes his head as if he can look through the wall to the other side of the restaurant where I left Janelle working on her papers.

"Dude, I'm serious. Know what? I think I saw her dancing with some of her friends at the club last night. I lost track of her after we came back from shooting pool. Damn shame. She had this little blue number on." Dawson kisses his fingertips; ‘chef’s kiss.’

I agree, kid. "Excuse me, guys. Gotta jet to the john. I'll be back in a minute." I stand up and walk to the main room of the restaurant, and approach Janelle’s table.
