Alex let her leave, cursing himself as he did so, because all he really wanted right now was to take her to bed. He stood at the rail of his rooftop terrace, with the sea air cooling his overheated face and helping him find some sort of equilibrium after that kiss.

Matt came up beside him, leaning on his elbows, taking in the spectacular sight of night-time in Melbourne at the water’s edge. ‘What’s going on, Alex?’

‘With what?’

‘You and Emma.’

Alex snapped his gaze to his friend, but Matt’s face was a blank mask. There was neither hope nor judgement. It was just a simple question from the person who knew him better than anyone else.

‘Nothing is going on. We’ve agreed to have some fun.’

‘Alex, you know I love you, right? But you’re an idiot.’

Alex couldn’t help the smile that broke through. He’d missed Matt’s particular brand of caring.

‘Bloody hell, mate... You feel something for her.’

Alex couldn’t lie to Matt. He did care for Emma. But that didn’t mean he would change the course of his life for her. He had made it perfectly clear what he was looking for, and he felt no guilt because Emma wanted the same. It was possible that she was as jaded as he was—except he wasn’t going to tell Matt that. Emma’s secrets were his to keep.

‘I’m not in it for the long haul, Matt.’

‘Then what are you doing? She’s not the only one growing attached. You are too. Have you considered that maybe you wouldn’t fare as badly as your father?’

Matt never pulled any punches. Not with Alex. For their entire lives they had been totally honest with each other. A difficult conversation was never avoided for fear of how the other would react.

‘I know I won’t, because I’m not going to commit.’

‘That’s a lie and you know it. You have a title to think about,’ Matt pushed.

‘I don’t know what to tell you. We’re having fun, and when it’s done we’ll go our separate ways. She knows the score.’

‘I know you’re lying to yourself.’ Matt shook his head, his tone softening. ‘Whether you want to or not, one day you will have to accept everything you’re trying to push away right now, Alex.’

Maybe Matt was right, but his legacy didn’t mean as much to Alex as it did to everyone else. So what if he never had a family? The manor, the title—they meant very little to him. How could he set any store by them when it couldn’t keep his family together? When that burden caused nothing but pain. Alex refused to put himself through that. There was no room for love in his life and there wouldn’t ever be. Of that he was certain. Alex enjoyed his life as it was right now.

Right now, you have Emma, said a voice within him. He stubbornly ignored it.

‘We’re going out,’ Alex said to Matt.

He needed to get away from his apartment to clear his head. Because everything in it made him think of Emma.
