I didn’t know I was running until I stopped.

I planted flowers, started growing food.

Got a dog, Myra. Take her for long walks

through woods and fields, and on our unpaved road.

Picked out a favorite place from which to watch

the Hudson’s perpetual motion flow—

like moments born, then borne into the past.

I couldn’t have dreamed this life, sixty years ago.

My neighbors invite me into their homes.

The passing Greyhound driver beeps and waves.

I didn’t know I was capable of such calm,

such privileged distance from the nation’s news.

My new friends Jean and Steve will laugh with joy

when they see this Christmas bust of their scalawag boy.
