“How could I have been so damn foolish with my heart?” The glass of bourbon breaks and drips down the wall when I throw it in one full swing.

I rip out of my wet tux jacket and toss it on the ground. Kicking out of my shoes and socks, I drink directly from the bottle, pressing it painfully hard to my lips. I walk over to the leather couch that was delivered two days ago and stare down at it. “I have to get rid of you.”

“Rhett, it’s Audrey. Please let me in.” She pounds on the door.

“Go away!”

She knocks louder. “I’m not going anywhere until we talk.”

“I have nothing to say to you!”

When I saw her standing there in that dark green dress tonight, I wanted to haul her into my arms and make love to her. She’s twisted my guts apart. I’m angry at myself for still wanting her so badly.

“If you don’t let me in, so help me I’m going to kick down your door.”

I can’t squelch the clawing need for her despite who she is.

“You have to the count of three.”

Her determination strips away my defenses.

“One! Please don’t make me injure my foot.”

I drag myself to my feet.

“Two!”

Inhaling sharply, I grab the doorknob and yank it open just as she says, “three.” She’s drenched with her hair falling down on her shoulders and raindrops staining the silky material of her dress. Her nipples are embedded into the material, and my dick combats with my boxers.

She blinks the rain from her long lashes. “I’m so sorry.” Her bottom lip quivers.

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.” She swallows.

“I don’t trust you.”

“I wouldn’t either,” she sobs.

I run my hand through my hair and clasp my hands behind my neck. “You were truthful about one thing.”

“What was that?”

“You told me the first day I met you, you’d break my heart.” I drop my hands to my side and turn my back to her, leaving the door wide open.

I lean on the counter with my fingers stretched wide, and I hear the click of the door closing. “And you said you’d never break mine.”

“I guess that makes me the liar then.”

Her footsteps bring her around the counter to look me in the eye. “It doesn’t have to be this way.”

“Yes, it does. I’m no good for you or anyone else.”

“I don’t agree.”

“You don’t have to. It’s just the way it is.”

She cautiously moves to where I’m standing, turning off her ringing phone and tossing it on the floor. “What happened to you?”

“It’s not important.”

“It is to me.” Her hand shakes when she reaches to touch my face.

“You’re soaking wet. You need to get out of those clothes.”

“So are you,” she whispers.

“I have a long shirt you can slip into and a pair of sweatpants.” I stomp to my bedroom and snatch open drawers, finding what I’m after. “You can use my bathroom and change into these.” I toss the clothes to her.

When she closes the door, I slip out of my wet slacks, change into a pair of lounge pants, and make my way to the couch, waiting for her.
