Snow petrel

Pagodroma nivea

In a land that is home to 7 species of penguin it may not be right to call the snow petrel the cutest bird of the continent, but it is a strong contender and easily the cutest flying bird in Antarctica!

These birds live mainly on fish, krill and squid and so must be near the sea to get a decent dinner.

It is the most southerly breeding bird in the world, mating even further south than the emperor penguin. Explorers have reported sightings of snow petrels at the geographical South Pole. Despite looking as cute as a snowball with kohl-black eyes, this is one of the toughest birds in the world and endures ridiculously cold temperatures and biting winds in a land where most humans fear to tread.
