Chapter Twenty-one

Outside CIA’s Safehouse

Freguesia, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Alsuwaidi’s short conversation with the local police at the scene of the shooting had been useless. They didn’t know where any of the shooters were. They had all vanished without a trace. A few witnesses were giving confusing and contradictory accounts.

The Bahraini assassin cursed out loud and shook his head. He stepped around the blood stains on the ground, careful to avoid the spent cartridges and shattered glass that littered the area. The acrid scent of gunpowder still lingered in the air, albeit faint.

He crossed beyond the point where the police had cordoned off the area and kicked the tire of his Mercedes-Benz in frustration. He climbed back into the sleek black sedan, then waved at the driver. “Let’s get out of here!”

“Where to, boss?” the man asked respectfully.

“Take us to the police HQ. I’ll get you the address in a moment.” He began to pull out his phone from his inside jacket pocket. “Maybe they’ll have some answers there.”

He entered his passcode and began to search for the address. Before he could find it, the phone rang. Alsuwaidi looked at the screen and grinned. He answered the phone, saying, “Yes, what do you have for me?”

“There was an accident in Madureira. Electronics store on Av. Min. Edgard Marino. Fifteen minutes ago,” a male voice said in a low tone.

“Was my friend involved?”

“Yes. Security cameras confirm it.”

“Where is he now?”

“I’m not sure. I’m checking other cameras. We last tracked him to about six blocks south of the store. Then, he disappeared.”

“Find him, or there is no money,” Alsuwaidi ordered sternly.

The police officer on the other end of the line let out a grunt of displeasure. “I’m risking my career by giving you this information,” he said in almost the same tone.

“You are, for a large sum of money. Now, get it done, and call me when you have something concrete.” Alsuwaidi ended the call and shook his head. I’m surrounded by idiots, he thought. He glanced at the driver, who was still giving him a look of expectation, and said, “Let’s go to the electronics store on Av. Min. Edgard Marino. Saint should be in the vicinity.”

“Right away, boss.” The driver gunned the engine.
