Chapter Nineteen

Hotel Banana

Thamel, Kathmandu, Nepal

Saint held the coffee cup with both hands and drew in a deep breath. The delicious aroma toyed with his nostrils. He knew the coffee was too hot, but he still wanted to taste it, take a small sip. But he didn’t want to burn his lips. He placed the cup slowly on the coffee table, then looked at Hannah sitting across from him.

The terrible drilling noise had stopped, but the dog barking had returned along with the security guards’ whistles. Saint was developing a headache but clenched his teeth and held his tongue. He closed his eyes for a long moment and when he opened them, he shook his head at Hannah and said, “I… I still can’t believe that you are alive. The last time I saw you… you were lying in a hospital bed at the clinic in Montenegro… Then the doctor calls the next day to give me the bad news that you had died. Later, I get a call from you—if that was you—when you were begging for help. I didn’t know what happened to you, whether you were dead or alive. Then, I find out that you’re an Interpol agent. And the next time I see you, you’re charging at a building, guns blazing.”

Hannah nodded and winced. “I understand, Saint. I know it was… still is a lot to process and make sense of. I… I wish things were different. That our paths would have never crossed after we said our goodbyes in London.”

Saint shook his head. “There were no goodbyes in London, Hannah. You left me abruptly and disappeared. Never answered my calls, emails, texts. Just poof.” He made a hand gesture like a magician at a show.

Hannah closed her eyes for a long moment. When she opened them, they glistened with sadness. “I had a tough choice to make, Saint. I found out I was pregnant. I just couldn’t tell you… I couldn’t. I hadn’t told you a lot of things, who I was… what I was doing in London… with you.”

Saint blinked back his surprise. The file he had received from the Russian hacker didn’t contain that detail about Hannah’s past with Interpol. “You were working for Interpol in London?”

Hannah nodded slowly. “Yes. The real estate magnate you were working for was someone on Interpol’s Red Notice list. I’m sure you know what that is now, don’t you?”

Saint frowned. He sensed a bit of sarcasm in Hannah’s voice but decided he wasn’t going to let it get to him. She’s an Interpol agent. Always has been, ever since we got together. I wasn’t an assassin at the time, but I’m sure she knows. And if she doesn’t, now’s the best time to tell her.

He leaned back and loosened his shoulders and torso. He felt the tension leaving his body. He drew in a deep breath, let it out slowly, and said, “I know all about Interpol’s Red Notice. I almost ended up on it. You know… with me being an assassin…”

Hannah’s eyes never left Saint’s face.
