Tanner entered the store with the cop at his side. It was the cop who introduced him to the staff. One of the workers recalled seeing Jonesy in his neighborhood recently and gave Tanner directions to the house where Jonesy was staying. The name of Jonesy’s friend was Mateo.

“Mateo’s a stoner,” the guy said.

It was a short drive to get there, and when they arrived, they saw a young man about Henry’s age loading up the rear of a minivan with luggage. He fit the description of Jonesy’s friend that Tanner had been given and was wearing jeans and a red sweatshirt.

Tanner spoke as he and Henry approached him. “Are you Mateo?”

Mateo said, “Yeah,” then looked back at his house.

“We’re looking for Jonesy,” Henry said.

“Are you two cops?”

Tanner moved closer. “We just want to talk to him. We need to know where he got the credit card he’s been using.”

Mateo cursed, then looked back at his house again. “Hey, I had nothing to do with that, okay? If I get in trouble again, my father won’t let me go on this trip with them.”

“Where are you headed?”

“Miami, to visit my sister and her rich husband. Their house is awesome and right on the damn beach. Does my father need to know about this?”

“Tell us where we can find Jonesy and we’ll be gone.”

“I don’t know where he went. I told him he couldn’t crash with me anymore. He did say he might use that card to rent a room somewhere.”

“Who gave Jonesy the card?”

“Nobody. He told me he found it at the rear of the store.”

“The convenience store out on the highway?”

Mateo shrugged. “I don’t know, maybe, or the one over by the park.”

An older man came out onto the porch and called to Mateo. “What’s going on?”

Henry smiled at him. “We’re asking for directions to the nearest motel.”

The man nodded, then spoke to Mateo. “Your mother has added two more bags; I hope we can fit them all in there.”

Mateo waved a hand at the rear of the minivan. “I’ll make them fit.” His father nodded and went back inside.

“So, where’s the nearest motel or hotel?” Tanner asked.

“Go back out on the highway, East 69, or maybe 77. You might find Jonesy at one of the motels that are there. Is he in a lot of trouble?”

Tanner turned and headed back to his truck, with Henry following.

“Do you think he was telling the truth?”

“Yeah. And I don’t think Soulless is involved. If he were, the kid would have been a lot more nervous, or already dead.”

“So, what now? Do we search the local motels?”

“No, but we will head back out to the highway and find a place to park near the first one we see. If Jonesy uses that card again, Tim will let us know.”

“I’m still wondering how the hell that credit card wound up in this town?”

“That’s a good question,” Tanner said, and at the back of his mind, an answer began to form.
