Chapter Nineteen

Los Angeles International Airport

California, United States of America

Lufthansa Flight 452 landed at the Los Angeles International Airport shortly after three twenty in the afternoon. Saint was slightly nervous about entering the country on a false passport. He completely trusted in his forger’s skills. They had been tested and proven three times at some of the most secure airports in the world.

However, this was a different situation. Saint wasn’t sure about Fieser’s reaction. The liaison could try to intercept Saint at customs and cause him to be arrested. Then, Fieser could dispatch an assassin or one of his FBI or police assets to eliminate Saint while he was in police custody. Things like that had happened in the past. They could happen again.

Or Fieser could choose to attack Saint shortly after he had left the airport. Unless Fieser wanted the authorities involved, he wouldn’t make an attempt on Saint within the terminal or on the airport grounds. Too much security and too many witnesses, including security cameras.

Therefore, Saint had a small window of opportunity to make sure he wasn’t easy prey. He had struck a deal with the forger, who provided more than documentation services. What Saint needed at this moment was something he couldn’t have taken on the plane.

He put on his poker face as he approached the customs and immigration officers. They took his fingerprints, but Saint wasn’t worried about his true identity popping up in the system. He had always entered and exited the United States in ways that didn’t leave behind any traces.

The officer, a young woman in perhaps her early twenties with braided black hair and an eyebrow piercing, asked him the customary questions about the purpose of his visit. Then she stamped his passport and welcomed him to the States.

Saint had no luggage, so he proceeded toward the exit. As he did so, he checked his phone. The forger had sent him an encrypted text message. Saint ran the decryption software and read the short message: Top floor. P4. Black F-350.

Saint smiled. Thank you, Robin.

He went past passengers fetching taxis and limousines or waiting to be picked up. The weather was warm and sunny, with just a touch of humidity in the air. The perfect California day. The bright blue skies stretched across the horizon.

At Terminal 4, he took the skywalk connecting to the parking lot. He found the truck parked right near the exit. Whoever Robin had sent had been on time and very thoughtful.

The forger’s note had said nothing about the key’s location. Saint tried to open the door, but it was locked. Where did he put the keys? Saint checked the tire wells, inside the gas tank flap, and other typical places. Then, he got down on his hands and knees and noticed a small black box fastened apparently through a magnet to the chassis next to the exhaust pipes. He reached for it and pulled it out. He flipped it open and found the truck’s keys. Bingo!

He opened the truck’s rear doors and looked around.
