Chapter 13

Angela returned to the suite announcing that she had interviewed Mrs. Redmond and an additional member of the catering staff.

“I was going to interview the final member of the catering staff, but I think the timing is wrong on that person. I also wanted to get back here before everyone leaves. I have a few hugs to give out.”

“What did you learn?” Marie asked.

“We can take Mrs. Redman off our suspect list. She was in town at the time of Laura’s death.”

“Yeah, that’s what the detective said,” Jill said.

“However, I did learn some new information. Mrs. Redman knew Laura Locklear, as they both were members of the historical society. She liked Laura and agreed with her opinions, which didn’t sit well with all members of the society.”

“Why?” Jo asked.

“She seems to have ruffled some feathers regarding the portrayal of slavery and Asheville’s role in the Civil War. Some members believe that slavery occurred over such a small period of time in Asheville’s history, that it needn’t be mentioned. Laura, as a history major in college, had a vastly different opinion. Some members of the historical society had an interest in history, but not necessarily an education. They had a fixed idea of what happened. Laura would suggest books to reference her statements, but it would fall on deaf ears. So that led to a lot of angst between Laura and some committee members. I asked Mrs. Redmond if she thought that any of that angst was enough to cause Laura’s murder, and she didn’t think so. Though she fully admitted that she didn’t know what it took to kill somebody since she had no personal knowledge of someone who murdered.”

“I’d have to agree with Mrs. Redmond that a disagreement over the history of certain events in Asheville is unlikely to inspire someone to murder. Denial of history by itself does not meet any mental health standard found in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, which is the preeminent book in my field,” Melissa said.

“Thanks. It’s good to have you on our team so we don’t chase people who can only be weakly viewed as suspects. How about the caterer? Any new information there?”

“No. She was on the late shift for your wedding and had left just before Rachel called her husband to help her carry stuff to her car. This employee turned left out of the church ruin and was parked on the grass. She said she made her own parking space in the lot. She didn’t notice if there was a car across the street. When she left the wedding reception, she was running late for another appointment and was talking on her phone as she got into the car. She also said that Elizabeth left perhaps thirty to forty-five minutes before she did. So our stranger in the car was likely gone by then as there was no reason to wait around. Also, the woman I interviewed said that the other person that worked the
