Life could be good, happy, and fulfilling in the Terlingua area, but it could also be hard and cruel. The small child in the center of this photograph is one of six unnamed Ramírez children who were stillborn or died soon after birth. A seventh baby, José, lived five days. All were buried in the La Coyota Cemetery, most by their father, Mariano. This 1929 photograph is part of a tradition to document the family and community and memorialize lost family members. In 1929, Mariano spent 250 days on the road freighting for La Harmonia Company, earning an amazing $1,100. However, that means that there is a good possibility that he was not present for the birth or death of this child.
