Case study 8.2: Janice’s magic wand

Janice was attending her third session of chemotherapy. She was anxious and fearful about the insertion of a needle to deliver her treatment. Although she could recognize how she felt she had no resources to deal with the fear. Using sensory language and asking one question at a time the therapist asked:

‘What colour is the fear?’

‘Does the fear have any sound?’

‘Where do you feel it in your body?’

Janice told the therapist, ‘It’s vivid red.’

‘It has a gnawing sound.’

‘It’s coming from here in my guts.’

The therapist then asked a second series of questions, still linked to the senses but focusing on changing the experience.

‘What colour would be the opposite of the red?’

‘What would be a contrast to the gnawing?’

‘Where would you send the feeling away from your guts?’

Immediately, Janice said, ‘It would be golden yellow.’

‘It would have a gentle stroking feeling.’

‘It would go out through my big toes.’

First, Janice was invited to think of drawing in the colour ‘golden yellow’ and to send it to ‘gently stroke her tummy’. The therapist invited her to see the colour ‘vivid red’ ‘flowing out through her “fabulous toes” and being replaced by the “golden yellow”’. At each stage of accessing the ‘more positive experience’ Janice accessed the ‘new and more resourceful state’ as she took a breath in from her aromastick. The intravenous needle was inserted in one easy movement, which Janice appeared to not notice.
