Chapter 13

“Okay, I promised not to suggest baking for the party, but I really think this whole atmosphere could be improved with some baked goods,” Raleigh said, standing in the middle of the room with her hands on her hips.

Spencer had passed a midterm in quantum physics that was supposed to be notoriously difficult, and Raleigh had firmly suggested that we should throw a party to celebrate. So now we were throwing a party.

“I really don’t think that people are going to come to this party because they want baked goods,” I said, looking up and around the apartment. I set my laptop to the side, willing myself not to look at the calendar invitation.

“False. Everyone loves baked goods.” She shook her head again. “There's just something missing here.”

“It wouldn’t be alcohol and drunk people, would it?” Spencer had promised to go out and pick up alcohol later, as long as we had enough duct tape to repair Lazzie.

It was a good thing that Spencer’s many years of science education had taught her how to fix anything with duct tape. One of the rear door handles had fallen off last week, and Spencer had stuck it right back on.

“Yes, but those are coming.” She stared at the room again, tilting her head to the side. “You know what it is? Fairy lights. You don’t have fairy lights.”

“We have literally never had fairy lights before at a party, and we’ve had plenty of good parties,” I replied, looking up from my computer, where I was pretending to read an article for communications.

“I don’t know why, but they’re speaking to me right now. And they’re telling me that they’re missing.” She turned towards me, putting her hands on her hips. “I’m going to Target.”

Sending Raleigh to Target by herself was dangerous. She wasn’t going to come back for a couple hours, and when she did, there was going to be more stuff with her than we possibly knew what to do with. Raleigh loved decorating things, especially things that didn’t belong to her, like my apartment.

Last year, she’d gotten excited about a sale on rubber ducks and bought us several dozen rubber ducks. Spencer had built a robot to launch them around the room. I was still finding them in my dresser.

“You are not seriously going to go to Target and insist on buying fairy lights for this party right now,” I replied. “Remember the duck debacle.”

I should have known better than to try to argue with Raleigh. “Those were on sale! And they really did brighten up the apartment. You need decorations to give the place character.”

“Right.” I still wasn’t convinced, but I wasn't going to waste any more time arguing. Raleigh was more like Spencer than she admitted. When one of them got an idea, it was happening, no matter what.

She grinned. “Okay. I’m picking some things up. Don’t even think about telling me that this is a bad idea.”

“Trust me, I can’t tell you anything is a bad idea,” I called after her as she grabbed her wallet and headed down the stairs.
