Of course he couldn’t make it out of the suite without rousing George. The floors didn’t creak, and he’d made barely a sound getting dressed, but for all he knew, George had been sitting there wide awake all night, ready to respond to anything that might turn into a threat. He was still half a dozen steps from escape when George’s bedroom door swung open and there was his bodyguard, dressed in warm gray sweats and thick socks.

“Mr. Fox?” he said with one eyebrow arched.

“I’m going for a walk,” Ethan said. “You don’t need to come. You know the property’s safe. And if someone wanted to kidnap me for ransom, they would have done it long before now.”

“You say I’m unnecessary?”

“I’m saying I’m going for a walk. I can’t sleep. I need some fresh air.”

“Plenty of that out on the balcony,” George said helpfully. “You want something to eat?”

“George.”

Slowly, George considered the outfit Ethan had put on: a heavy pair of pants, a thick crew-neck sweater, and a warm jacket with a hood. Boots with thick treads. He’d stuffed a watchcap and gloves into the pockets of the jacket.

“Go back to bed,” Ethan said.

No one had ever said so, specifically, but he suspected that was very close to what he’d told George two years ago, probably at around this same time of night: I’m fine. Go to bed. See you in the morning. George’s expression gave away exactly nothing, but you’d have to be a fool to think he didn’t have an opinion.

“I’m walking,” Ethan said. “Not driving. I don’t even know what you did with the car keys. Really, I’m fine. Unless you think a moose or a bear is going to come charging out of the woods and take me down.”

“That’s not impossible.”

Finally, after what seemed like several hours of his standing there poker-faced, George’s shoulders relaxed a little and he sighed. That small gesture prompted Ethan to grin at him. He’d hired George years ago without having given much thought to whether they’d get along—after all, George needed to protect him, not be his buddy—but they had a rhythm now. Something close enough to friendship that Ethan couldn’t imagine George not being around.

“Thanks,” he said, and meant it. “I’ll be back in a while. You should get some sleep while you can. It’s New Year’s Eve.”
