Chapter Five

Anne hadn’t had an attack where she could barely breathe for months, but just the mere sound of Yves’ voice had her freezing up and panicking. She had hoped to get away from him, that last night was just a fluke. But it wasn’t. That had been Yves, and he was here.

She didn’t want to go back there. She didn’t want to be around Yves. He seemed to have the belief that he had first rights to Anne after his brother. Anne just wanted to get away from him. Why couldn’t people accept what she wanted?

Jefferson City was a big change for her. People were kind, they didn’t treat her harshly. There was an occasional person who thought they could speak to her in a way that had Anne wanting to cry, but there were always people to back her up. She hadn’t had this many people looking out for her in a long time.

For the last few months, she had been feeling better about herself. She could do with putting weight back on, but she was focused on Tamsin and looking over her shoulder. It just took the slightest thing that reminded her of her in-laws and Anne was skittish. She couldn’t do it forever, but she could make sure she didn’t go back.

If Yves tried to kidnap her, Anne would fight. She would fight the whole way. Or run again. Someone would be able to hide her. Yves was a brute, and he was mean, but Anne could outrun him. If needed, she would get a gun. Anything to protect herself and Tamsin. If they went back, it wouldn’t be to a wedding. It would more likely be to a coffin. And then who would look after Tamsin? Anne would not let that happen.

At least Chris hadn’t given her away. The man had been steadfast for her over the recent months. Anne didn’t know what she did to deserve it, especially when Chris had been so determined to keep her at arms length right from the beginning, but she was glad. Chris was certainly worth his weight in gold, even if he didn’t believe it.

Just the feel of his arms around her made Anne feel better. She hadn’t had anyone hold her with such gentleness since before Francois died. Anne had been reluctant to take embraces from her friends, and they understood that. With Chris, it seemed almost natural to allow him to hug her. He was softer and more gentle than he made himself out to be. And he was hurting, which had Anne wanting to soothe that for him. She wanted to look after him if he allowed it. When he was stabbed, Chris had allowed her to nurse him, even if he barely stayed in bed and wanted to get up and move around. He was stubborn, a typical Foster trait. Anne had to admire that about him, even if she wanted to smack him upside the head for being a fool with his health at times.
