The Blood of Angels

The room was filled with light, so bright it chased away the shadows everywhere except around Damon. For a moment, he seemed to stir, responding to Sanctus’s arrival despite the internal struggle in which he was engaged. But it was only a shudder of movement before he sank back to the ground.

Ines barely noticed. She was horrified at the sight of Toby lying bleeding on the floor. Only the menace of Sanctus as he leapt into the room could distract her from the sight.

“You think you’re so tough?” he said. “Think you’re so smart, hiding in a darkened hole like a scared little mouse, playing with pitiful distractions? I am going to destroy you, and then I’ll destroy your little friends. The Kingdom of Heaven stops for no mortal.”

“I don’t know what Heaven’s really like,” Ines said. “But if you count as good there, then it can go to Hell.”

She darted toward the knives, but Sanctus was ahead of her, blocking the way to the table. His knuckle-dusters shone as he whipped out with his fist, smacking Ines in the shoulder. She spun around, just managing to retain her balance, ducked a second punch, and shifted back, fists raised. Knives had never been a natural part of her fighting style anyway. She knew judo. She knew Krav Maga. She could take on this gleaming pillar of pomposity with his shining tracksuit and shinier eyes.

Sanctus prowled in a slow circle around her, shifting from foot to foot like a boxer warming up at the start of a match. He jabbed at her once, twice, three times, testing her defences. More cautious than she remembered. Less impulsive than she expected.

Running her gaze up and down his body, she looked for any sign of a misstep or badly planned move. It didn’t seem likely that an angel would have a weak knee or a wonky hip, but there was one sign of hope. A slash showed in his tracksuit where she had stabbed him earlier, and the glimpse of flesh beneath it looked broken. Was he still recovering?

This time, his attack was for real, a swift series of blows that sent her back across the room as she dodged and wove, blocked and parried. He almost forced her into a corner, but at the last moment, she leapt left, vaulting a table and landing in the open. As he turned, she leapt to the center of the room, seizing the open ground, before going on the offensive.

The techniques she had learnt were more about defense than offense, but that didn’t mean they couldn’t be used in other ways. If nothing else, fighting for her life had taught her to fight dirty. She advanced on Sanctus with a series of kicks. As he swung a punch, she grabbed his arm, twisted, and lifted.

It wasn’t a perfect throw, but it was as good as she could get against a man of his size. He was lifted from his feet, across her back, and through the air.
